Ryzen 9 7940HS Specifications

BGA8 cores / 16 threads

Released April 30, 2023

AMD's Ryzen 7040 mobile chip: eight Zen 4 cores and 16 threads boost to 5.2GHz from a 4GHz base, with 16MB of L3 cache and Radeon 780M graphics — the same core count, clock ceiling and cache as the newer 8945HS above it. AMD's page lists this chip's TDP as configurable across 35W to 54W rather than a single fixed figure, and a launch-era company table put the range at 35W to 45W. Built on 4nm process technology under the Phoenix codename, it launched in April 2023.

Tied 5th of 23 models in the Laptop CPU catalog on Boost clock — 2 models share this figure. Tied 12th of 23 models in the Laptop CPU catalog on L3 cache — 8 models share this figure.

What owners and reviewers say

Summarised from 1 source(s), reviewed September 14, 2026. A source is counted only where it names this model exactly. How we track prices

Commonly praised

  • Reviewers found strong CPU and GPU performance in both Windows and Ubuntu, with the Radeon 780M coping with light gaming.
  • Idle and load power consumption were low for an eight-core mini PC.
  • Linux benchmarks showed the chip holding up well against comparable Intel and AMD mini PCs.

Commonly criticised

  • Its performance depends heavily on how the host chassis sets cooling and power limits.
