Ryzen 7 9800X3D Spec and Price in Canada

AM58 cores / 16 threads

Released November 7, 2024 ·

The gaming default at the high end: eight Zen 5 cores with AMD's second-generation 3D V-Cache stacked beneath them rather than on top, which is what lets this one clock and overclock like a normal part instead of a cache-limited one. Against the 9700X it trades a little all-core headroom for a large lead anywhere a game is bound by memory latency. Buy it to play games at high frame rates; buy the 9950X instead if the machine mostly compiles or renders.

  • The repositioned cache is said to make it much easier to cool and more efficient than the previous generation.
  • Many buyers report it also handles streaming, CAD and productivity workloads well.

Commonly criticised

  • It carries a high price and lower application performance than similarly priced alternatives.
  • It draws more gaming power than the previous X3D part and has no AI-acceleration unit.
  • One owner reports reliability problems across several units, with a boot error appearing at startup.
  • One reviewer notes idle power consumption is higher than a comparable competitor chip.
  • Some users found brief temperature spikes alarming at first, though described as normal for the platform.
  • Several owners of the previous generation say the upgrade is not worth the price for the gain.
