The Phoenix controller and a small DRAM cache keep random-write performance consistent under sustained load, which is the practical difference from the DRAM-less 980 at the same speed tier. It remains the upgrade pick for laptops and older desktops capped at PCIe 3.0 that want reliable throughput rather than the newest interface.
