Ryzen Threadripper 9980X Spec and Price in the United Kingdom

sTR564 cores / 128 threads

Released July 31, 2025 ·

The 9000 Series flagship: 64 Zen 5 cores and 128 threads with 256MB of L3 cache, twice the 9960X and 9970X's cache in the same 350W TDP. Unlike the 7980X it replaces, which boosted 200MHz below its smaller 7000 Series siblings, the 9980X reaches the full 5.4GHz boost shared across the whole 9000 Series lineup, though its 3.2GHz base stays the lowest of the three. At $4,999 boxed — the same price as the 7980X — quad-channel DDR5-6400 and up to 80 PCIe 5.0 lanes round out the platform.

Tied 23rd of 65 models in the CPU catalog on Boost clock — 8 models share this figure. Tied 1st of 65 models in the CPU catalog on L3 cache — 2 models share this figure.

What owners and reviewers say

Summarised from 3 source(s), reviewed September 14, 2026. A source is counted only where it names this model exactly. How we track prices

Commonly praised

  • Reviewers found its multi-core performance second only to the Threadripper Pro 9000 line, and a strong option for extreme workstation work.
  • They noted it has no direct competitor on the Intel Xeon side and that the Zen 5 update brings a faster AVX-512 implementation and DDR5-6400 support.
  • Across more than 200 Linux benchmarks it showed serious generational improvements over the 7980X while using similar or lower average CPU power.

Commonly criticised

  • Its single-core and gaming performance lag well behind mainstream desktop chips, and it even loses some tests to the cheaper 32-core 9970X.
  • The HEDT TRX50 platform offers only four memory channels, below the eight-channel Pro line.
